Last spring, someone asked me if I could build them a website using Mambo or Joomla. l told him that I didn’t know anything about it, but I would look into it. What I learned was, both are state-of-the-art Content Management Systems (CMS) used to build dynamic web site communities and database driven collaborative management systems. There are other CMS systems available as well, including E-104, PostNuke and Drupal among others, but Mambo and Joomla are two of the most popular. All of the CMS systems I looked at were based on (LAMP) which is an acronym for Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP. This is the configuration for the majority of non-Microsoft web servers. Actually, Microsoft is the new kid on the block and these are still the primary servers for hosting web sites. These popular CMS systems are open source and licensed under the GNU/GPL general public license which means they are FREE to download and use. To run a CMS system, you need a web hosting account with a web server that supports LAMP. |
